In June 2022 I took on the inaugural Transalp 1200, a bike ride through northern Italy, Austria and Slovenia. The 1250km event started and finished in Verona and took in the South Tirol, the Sillian and Julian Alps along the way.

I’m reading John McGahern’s ‘That They May Face the Rising Sun’, a beautiful , lyrical novel set in the rural west of Ireland. I’ve been travelling to Ireland for over forty years and this book captures perfectly the unique rhythm of speech and of the characters you encounter. The image here is of Castlepark, near Kinsale, our family home taken in June 2019.
